In most countries, preparation of a doctoral programme is typically three years (excluding undergraduate study); it may last longer in the humanities and social sciences. The doctor of philosophy or abbreviated Ph.D. or PhD is in the Anglo-Saxon university system, the most common title of a doctoral degree. Universities in the non-English-speaking world have begun adopting similar standards to those of the Anglophone PhD degree for their research doctorates.
Criteria for award of research doctorates vary somewhat throughout the world, but typically require the submission of a substantial body of original research undertaken by the candidate. A significant part is devoted to the drafting and defense of a thesis called thesis or dissertation. Access to doctoral studies: students who want to earn the PhD degree must complete a Master's degree programme which lasts for 2 years after graduation with a Bachelor's degree (5 years in total).
