The E.C.T.S. European Credit Transfer System, is a method to count and accumulate credits in order to create more transparency between European higher education institutions and allow them to sign bilateral or multilateral agreements. Credits are recognized in all the member states and make it easier to compare schools' programs, to travel and get academic recognition in Europe or worldwide.
The E.C.T.S. facilitates the understanding of the studies' programs for the students, in their home country and abroad. It also makes students' mobility and academic recognition easier.
It guarantees the programmes' transparency because it gives precise informations on the course units and their importance for getting a degree.
E.C.T.S. is based on the student's workload including lectures, tutorials, seminars, private study - in the library or at home- and examinations or other assessment activities.
Each course unit is allocated a certain sum of credits according to contact hours, total workload from the student and requirements. The credit is a tool for assessing knowledge and skills and E.C.T.S. is the common system used throughout Europe. All these informations can be found on one of the program's bilingual brochures. E.C.T.S. was created in 1998 by the European Union. Since 1999 it is one of the main tools of the Bologna Process.
